The Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance (CBA) is inviting local residents, families, and children to roll up their sleeves, dive into fun activities, and play a hands-on role in preserving our coastal environment.

If you’ve been looking for ways to connect with nature, give back to your community, and teach your kids the importance of environmental stewardship, this is the perfect opportunity.

What is the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance?

The CBA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the waterways that define our region, from the Choctawhatchee River and Bay to the coastal dune lakes and the Gulf of Mexico. Their mission is to ensure that future generations can enjoy the same pristine natural beauty we do today.

Volunteers Needed Right Now

CBA is looking for volunteers to help monitor Water quality! Gathering data is a crucial step to protecting our environment. Data can help detect problems and inform management decisions. Water quality data is used by scientists to better understand ecology, climate change, human health, and more. 

How can you help? Adopt a section of the Chocatwhatchee Bay or a Coastal Dune Lake. Visit the location once a month to take samples and measurements. No experience is necessary! CBA staff will provide training and supplies. Email: wingardk@nwfsc.edu for more details.

Volunteer Opportunities for All Ages

Whether you’re a nature-loving adult or a parent looking for meaningful activities for your children, the CBA has something for everyone:

• Oyster Reef Building - Help rebuild oyster reefs that protect shorelines from erosion and provide habitats for marine life. It’s hard work, but gratifying—and a great way for older kids and teens to learn about marine ecology.
• Coastal Dune Lake Monitoring -These rare, globally significant lakes are unique to South Walton. Join the CBA team in monitoring water quality and contributing to scientific research that helps preserve these natural wonders.
• Seagrass Surveys - Dive into shallow waters (literally or figuratively!) and learn about seagrass's vital role in the bay's health. This family-friendly activity is both educational and fun.
• Native Plant Restoration - Help restore the natural landscape by planting native species that improve water quality, reduce flooding, and support local wildlife. Kids will love getting their hands dirty while learning about the environment.

Educational Programs and Youth Engagement

The CBA also offers hands-on learning experiences designed specifically for children. Their programs encourage curiosity and teach young minds how to protect and appreciate the natural world around them. From school-based initiatives to weekend family events, these activities foster a love for science, nature, and community.
