There are SO many reasons to love 30A and South Walton, Florida; including pristine sandy white beaches, beautiful state parks, open preservation areas and world-class beach towns! One of the things that makes this stretch of the Northwest Gulf Coast extra special and extremely unique is the presence of Coastal Dune Lakes.
These special lakes are only found in five place world-wide: Madagascar, Australia, New Zealand, Oregon and here on the Gulf Coast in Walton County. Scattered along Scenic Highway 30A from Watersound Beach to Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, you’ll find eleven of the area’s 15 lakes, giving South Walton the distinction of having the largest concentration of Dune Lakes in the world.
A Rare Ecosystem on the South Walton Coastline!
The shorelines of the lakes often border pristine sand dunes and Pine forest areas. They are fed by fresh water creeks and streams but because of their close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico they also have tidal salt waters that intermittently flow into them from the Gulf. This mixture of location to the gulf, the salt and fresh water creates a rare and very delicate ecosystem. In an effort to protect the Dune Lakes and their immediate surrounding forest areas, the county established a Coastal Dune Lake Advisory Board along with a partnership with the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance.
If you’re considering purchasing property here at the beach, beautiful homes located in Watersound Beach, Grayton Beach or Dune Allen on a Coastal Dune Lake can often provide the best of both worlds, with waterfront living and fun accessto the beach by boat, kayak or stand-up paddle board.
