What’s Up with Those Colored Flags at the 30A Beach Access Points?

Have you been to the beach lately and noticed a single bright colored flag flapping in the breeze? Maybe you thought to yourself, "hmmm, I wonder what that’s all about?" Along the Beaches of South Walton, we have a stellar South Walton Fire Department Life Guard program with seven stations posted along the beaches of 30A.
As part of the effort to keep everyone aware of surf conditions, a Flag Warning System is in place at all of the public beach access points. Depending on the weather and the day you go to the beach you’ll see any number of different colored flags flying.
The flags are changed depending on what is happening with the weather, surf and tides. Each color represents a specific surf advisory currently in effect:
GREEN:Low Hazard, Calm Conditions, Exercise Caution. YELLOW:Medium Hazard, Moderate Surf and/or Moderate Currents. RED:High Hazard, High Surf and/or Strong Currents. DOUBLE RED:Water Closed to the Public. PURPLE:Marine Pests Present.
The South Walton Fire Department makes it easy to check out conditions ahead of time: You can go online to check out surf conditions at: www.swfd.org/action.php, OR simply text "beachflag" to 67463.
Do you own a vacation rental home at the beach? You or your rental company can help spread the word to visitors by posting information about the Flag Warning System in your rental home. Knowing what each flag represents could be the difference between life and death! For more information on how to get magnets or flyers contact the South Walton Fire Department at 850.267.1298.
Whether you’re a local home owner, second home owner or a visitor to the beautiful South Walton Beaches, plan ahead and know beach conditions before you go!
