Western Lake Bridge Replacement: A One-Year Update

Time flies when you’re rebuilding a bridge! It’s been a full year since work began on the Western Lake Bridge along County Road 30A, and if you’ve driven across lately, you’ve probably noticed the towering cranes and rhythmic pounding of construction work. Here’s the latest scoop on the progress.

Bridge Construction Update

Over the last several months, project crews have been busy mobilizing heavy-duty cranes, preparing for demolition, and setting the stage for the next major steps. Most recently, work has focused on installing a temporary sheet pile retaining wall on the south side of the bridge. November saw the start of pile driving—one of the most critical phases of construction. And yes, FDOT crews are getting an early start, with permits allowing them to work from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. Thankfully, all major construction is happening off the main County Road 30A roadway to keep disruptions to a minimum.

What’s Included in the $11.8 Million Project?

The Western Lake Bridge Replacement Project isn’t just a facelift—it’s a full-scale infrastructure upgrade. Here’s what’s in store:

During construction, drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians should expect periodic lane shifts. Temporary single-lane closures on Scenic 30A may occur from Sunday through Thursday, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Western Lake Pedestrian Bridge Enhancements

Good news for walkers, joggers, and cyclists! The Western Lake Bridge replacement isn’t just about vehicles—it’s also making things safer for pedestrians. The updated design includes wider sidewalks and added safety barriers, making it more inviting for those who prefer a scenic stroll (or bike ride) along 30A.

The project is on track for completion in summer 2025, with FDOT working strategically to keep two lanes of traffic open whenever possible. Temporary lane closures will be carefully managed to minimize disruptions to the steady flow of beachgoers, locals, and delivery trucks.
